The “Notaire”

“Notaires” are legal executives appointed by the state to oversee all property transactions and to ensure that app“ropriate taxes generated by the transaction are paid on behalf of the government. As official government witnesses, the put the transaction on public record and ensure that the vendor and buyer are who they say they are (by checking ID). They will ensure that the correct conveyancing is carried out according to the law, but will not tell you if the contract terms are unfavourable to you. For this, you must use an independent lawyer. Although they are qualified to provide legal advice, notaries are neutral and do not act on behalf of either side.
